Set Microsoft Teams as default IM in Microsoft Outlook

We have been using Lync or Skype for business as an instant messaging(IM) which is default integrated with Microsoft Outlook.

Since nowadays most of our communications happening on MS Teams, and people already migrated from Skype to MS Teams for all messaging and file sharing, then we should also change the default IM in MS outlook, so that we can initiate a chat from mail and we need not find that person separately in MS Teams. Here I am going to demonstrate how to set MS Teams as the default IM with MS outlook application.

Setting in MS Teams

Step 1: Open Microsoft Teams, go to the profile section from the top right corner. then go click on the setting option. Please take the help from the below screenshot.

Step 2: A new popup window will appear with setting configurations. Go to General tab, >> then check the option "Register Teams as the chat app for Office (requires restarting Office applications)".

Set default IM in outlook

We have done with MS Teams setting, now close the setting window.

Step 3: Open or restart Microsoft Outlook application.

We have done will the settings. Now try to initiate a chat with anyone from outlook, instead of opening Lync or Skype the IM gets initiated in MS Teams.

Hope this helps you!
